ENERGY SAVING LIGHTING FOR SCHOOLS VIA GOVERNMENT INVESTMENT SCHEME

This week, (06/12/22), the UK Department of Education launched a national investment scheme, promising £500m for energy efficient upgrades in schools and colleges. The aim is to protect institutions from rising energy bills, especially during winter months. It will also help manage energy consumption and put in place solutions that will last for years. It aims to boost the institutions’ budgets, which will feed back into the economy via service providers.

According to the Government websiteEstimations show that on average, a primary school will receive approximately £16,000, a secondary school will get £42,000 and a further education college group will benefit from £290,000.”  A key part of the scheme is improving setups with the latest technology in energy efficient lighting.

The Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, has said:

“We’re putting this cash in the hands of school and college leaders quickly, so they can decide what work is needed and so that our brilliant teachers can focus on teaching in a warm and safe environment”.

How we can help…

We (Lumena Lights Ltd.) have been supplying energy efficient to schools and many other public institutions for more than 10 years. Initially, supply was of CFLs but now LED lighting is the new standard, being the most efficient and economical option. With this well-needed funding now being implemented, more schools will be able to benefit from savings on bills and lower energy consumption.

3 years ago Lumena took the next step in supplying energy efficient lighting with solar. We launched our revolutionary range of professional solar lighting designed to work in the UK. These high-end solar bollard lights have been supplied to many different commercial premises. This includes schools and colleges, such as Eton College and the University of Oxford.

The solar bollard lights have proved to exceed expectations over the path 3 winters. They have been designed with performance, brightness and reliability in mind. This is achieved with high-capacity lithium batteries and specialist technology, such as power-saving functions and gradual dimming sequences.

Lumena Sales Manager, Ben Courtney, has witnessed a change in buying habits, even from the electrical trade. They now often seek a solar alternative.

Now the trade is aware that the quality of solar lighting has improved, they are confidently specifying solar lighting options. Most of the time, the solar lights are specified for areas where cabling and power is not a viable option. The reasons could be: cost, time, sustainability, or because of general upheaval. It ticks the environmental boxes for all involved too, which is a really positive step”

Since the end of 2020 Lumena have been developing an even brighter Solar Street Light Range – ViaMAX.

These larger scale designs are suited to commercial premises such as walkways and venue car parks, usually attached to lamp posts or columns. The range includes various designs, covering ambient lighting as well as signage lighting and general security lighting.

An example of security lighting is the Dominium with motion sensor (below right). This provides low-level lighting throughout darker hours, which brightens upon motion detection. Another key feature is the  large, adjustable solar panel for efficient charging in all weathers. Many of the designs have multiple lighting functions to prolong illumination time. All of the above are important factors in retaining enough charge to shine bright in the UK, all year!
