Radiata Pacaman Sleeper Installed at Rockbrook Camp for Girls

Radiata Pacaman Sleeper installed at Rockbrook Camp for Girls, North Carolina

Rockbrook Camp for Girls is a traditional summer camp for girls located in the wooded mountains of Western North Carolina, America. Girls from all over the world are welcome to attend. The camp was established by Nancy Braum Clarke back in 1921 and is now 104 years old. It is known for its rustic charm, with large trees, rocks, streams, and waterfalls. From the very beginning, the camp program was based on the notion that girls gain independence by learning to make decisions themselves and by living away from home in an outdoor environment, creating a haven for girls.

All the buildings at Rockbrook Camp for Girls are built with roughly sawn wood, and their walkways are made out of flat stone, with natural log posts and rails. Even when constructing something new, they strive to maintain the historic and natural aesthetic that Nancy had worked so hard to achieve. With newly built cabins comes the demand for lighting. Lighting doesn’t just enhance visibility, but it also brings safety for the girls at Rockbrook Camp. Jeff Carter, owner and director of Rockbrook Camp for Girls, has been searching for a lighting solution that would likewise blend in with the forest surroundings, and something wooden seemed most appropriate to match this pre-existing aesthetic.

‘’ We were very excited to find the Lumena bollards, and loved their natural, unfinished look.’’
– Jeff Carter

The reason they needed outdoor lighting for this new build was due to a terrace of stone steps leading up to the front porch, which is accessible to all children on site at all hours. With this in mind, lighting the steps was an important safety consideration.

’We wanted the building’s approach to be warm and welcoming. Installing two bollards and two small step lights has made the perfect addition.’’ – Jeff Carter.

Jeff had purchased two 12V Charleston Slatlite in a Rustic Bronze Finish and two 12V Radiata Pacaman Sleeper Path Lights. Jeff has advised that ‘’installing this lighting was simple’’ due to all four fixtures having the ability to be connected to the same 12V transformer. They ran a low-voltage wire underground, with a photocell sensor built into the transformer, allowing the lights to turn on automatically during nightfall.

‘’We ended up cutting the two bollards to different lengths, allowing them to match the incline of the terrace. We think the results are beautiful’’
– Jeff Carter

Overall, Jeff has given the ease of installation, performance, functionality and light output a 10/10!

‘’All good with no complaints! This project has been a great success, and it’s nice to have these quality Lumena fixtures be a part of that’’ – Jeff Carter

The demand for high-quality wooden bollard lights has increased due to their aesthetic appeal and increasing focus on sustainable and eco-friendly outdoor lighting solutions. The Radiata Path Light Range is created with sustainably sourced solid radiata pine timber, which is then CNC machined by a top FSC-certified timber supplier, specifically to incorporate our luminaires. These stylish wooden path lights are sleeper and post styles, built to withstand all weather conditions and heavy-duty in structure. This is a natural material, which will weather, although the Tanalith E preservative treatment applied helps increase the moisture levels, which, in exchange, reduces the cracking of the wood.

Radiata Range

The Radiata range offers various designs that enrich your landscape plan with warm tones; a great example is the Radiata Post. This post light offers two designs, the Eyelite and the Slatlite, available in an Aged Silver finish or a Rustic Bronze finish. Rustic bronze is the ultimate autumnal tone, with both the timber and luminaire seamlessly blending in and complementing one another. Aged silver adds a slightly more contemporary feel with a luminaire that stands out from the timber.

The expected life of the pine post is up to 15 years. As a natural material, Radiata products will possess structural features, such as knots, splits and twists, making each post unique.

We’re pleased to have been able to assist Rockbrook Camp for Girls in maintaining the historical and organic aesthetic that the camp has to offer, as well as improving visibility and safety for all girls attending the camp.
